Well I'm sure you already tried the contact form here on the Papercraft Museum website: http://www.papercraftmuseum.com/contact/ ?

If it doesn't work, you can also try sending him an e-mail directly; his e-mail adress is on the contact page too, but you can't click it directly to prevent spambots picking it up, so make sure you don't make any typos when you type it in in your e-mail program! ;o)

Haywan / Papercraft Museum is also on Facebook and YouTube:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Papercraft-Museum/148766741856694
http://www.youtube.com/user/PaperCraftMuseum

So if you have an account there too, maybe you can try sending him a message there too if you don't get a reply by e-mail.

But I'm afraid I really don't know if Haywan is still very active as a papercrafter and with the Papercraft Museum websites...? But if he does get your message, I'm sure he'll be willing to answer you! ;o)

Thanks ninjatoes!! Once again you came to my rescue :P I will have a look at the website but i have looked at home and the colours we have are too dark. I have recently started cutting out the pieces for the SSBB Mario so i will see what pens i have for that. Do you know of anyway i could contact haywan and ask him where he got his pens if i dont find them with your great suggestion?

Thanks again

You really don't need any special pens or markers just for "edge-colouring"!

For darker colours, really any kind of marker in the right colour will do: The colour tends to turn darker when "edge-colouring" (colouring the crossection/edge of the paper) than when you normally colour the surface of the paper, because the ink from the marker will soak into the paper a bit.

That's why for lighter colours, it's often better to use colour pencils instead of markers, because the colour won't suddenly turn darker than you expected with pencils.

Always try out the markers and pencils you have to see if the colour turns out the way you expected (you can simply cut a small, unused piece of paper from the templates themselves, or make a quick test model).

If you really want to use the exact same brand as Haywan, there's a list of stores on the Australian Crayola website that should carry Crayola products: http://www.crayola.com.au/where-to-buy.aspx

But Crayola is a very popular brand, so I doubt that list is complete: I'm sure many more local toy stores and department stores in Australia sell Crayola markers! ;o)

Even if you can't find it in the store yourself, don't hesitate to ask the people who work there: maybe you just overlooked them, or maybe they can order them for you, or maybe they can tell you a different store where you might find them.

And like I said, if you really can't find the exact same ones that Haywan used, don't stress out over it! ;o)

Try out the markers and pencils you probably already have on a small and simple papercraft test model, and maybe you already have all the colours you need.

If not, don't worry too much about a specific brand which might be hard to get, but see which ones you can easily get from your local toy shop or department store for a fair price.

Just have fun, and take care building your models, and then after it's completed you probably won't even notice which kind of markers you used! ;o)

Hey PaperCrafters,

Not to long ago I posted a New topic (Model Help/Tips) if you could read that post before this one that would be great.
I was just wondering where i could buy these pens in Australia or Ebay. I saw Haywan used them in his YouTube video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5S3iGMQDivM&list=UU8piipyfjP29GBZM97TRgmA&index=18

Anyway these are the pens I want

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51I4oRiL0sL.jpg

Can anyone find those in Australia or Ebay for a cheap price? (Under $15 including shipping if any shipments needed)

Thanks Bluebsy

Thanks ninjatoes I had a look at your website and the stripe/band across the top is a perfect example of what I mean by you can't see the edges. Yes it's a fair bit away but still you can't see the edges at all. In that photo did you edge colour all those models?

Thanks a lot ninjatoes I'll give it a try

You can't always judge by a picture of course, because some people are simply better at building paper models and taking pictures than others, some pictures are taken close up and others from further away, and maybe in one picture the light hits the model in such a way that the edges make small shadows and if you make the light hit it another way, those shadows disappear...

But there are some easy things you can do to try and make the lines much less visible:

"Smooth" models can be made by not scoring the fold lines and not making sharp, crisp folds, but only "bending/curving" the paper (called "pre-shaping"). You can see it (and other techniques) in Yamaha's papercraft tutorial for instance:

http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/entertainment/papercraft/howto/0002.html

But if the model is originally very "blocky" it won't always give a good result (some paper models were just made to look "blocky" ;o)

As for getting rid of the "lines" themselves, you can use a marker or a coloured pencil or a crayon (or a whatever you like) in the appropriate colour to colour the white edges of the paper before glueing the parts together (often called "edge-colouring"):

http://ninjatoes.blogspot.com/2012/11/papercraft-building-faq.html#Edgecolouring
http://ninjatoes.blogspot.com/2008/11/edge-coloring-tutorial.html

It's best to use pencils or crayons for lighter colours because if you use markers, the ink will kinda soak into the paper and turn darker than you expected. Try it out on a scrap piece of a paper or a very simple test model first.

If you use very thin paper, the edges won't be so visible either (but your paper model won't be very strong to handle either...)

And of course the most important part is to take your time and have fun building, and then you will get the best result! ;o)

Hey guys and gals,

i was just wondering if anyone had tips on how to make models look so smooth I guess the word could be. I can always see where the pieces join up but in some models you can even see where the pieces join up unless you look as hard as you can.

Here are some examples of what I mean:

This model you can see where the edges join up
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3014/2296206860_01eff60991_o.jpg

Whereas this model you can't
http://www.papercraftmuseum.com/pcm/pics/ToonLink.jpg

Can you please give me some tips on how to make my models looks as good as the Toon Link?

I recommend the rubber handle X-acto knife (which is on his website and is on our advanced tutorial here too) and a set of knives. Blades always dull after awhile, just buy a pack of them, they are cheap. I bought a pack of 100 x-acto blades for $25 so it's basically 25 cents each blade.

Most of us are amateurs doing this for fun, not as a job.

I don't know what a "all type" glue is but if you read the advanced tutorial it'll tell you what is recommend for glue.

You are fine using normal printing paper if you think you can handle a delicate paper model that might collapse due to its fragility, that is why slightly thicker paper is recommended. Again, read the advanced tutorial here, it is explained in there.

If you just started, you should start basic, and see if you like it. Because the page you found is for people that know how to papercraft, and want to spend money at it.
These guides are a little more basics: http://www.papercraftmuseum.com/beginner-tutorial/
http://www.papercraftmuseum.com/advanced-tutorial/
Under the beginner one is also an explanation about PepaKura Viewer.
I use glue that is for all types. That works out pretty well. Also a knife is nice, but a scissor can do just as well if you start.

Hope this helped.

I have been thinking of this for for the whole week, but the only option I can think of is changing to printer settings, so it prints it on a different size. Or screenshotting the pdf file, putting that in photoshop, then adjusting the size.
Because as far as I know pdf files are mostly used to make sure no editing happens to the file.

That option makes the flaps colored. So normally they are white, but if you turn on that option you will get like 0.5 cm of colour on the flap from the "neighboring face". Neighboring face means the face it should attach to. Hope this helps.
O, and I recently tried to use it, but when using it, it is very difficult to see where you should cut, and where you should fold your flaps.

I've had that before and fixed it by using a few drops of water on a napkin and cleaning the ink cartridge

I always use tweezers and try to put my remaining piece on with as much glue as possible, it may be messy, but you can clean it with a napkin afterwards.

Whenever i use my printer, it has full ink but still creates ugly lines of faded color across my pages. Has anyone had a similar issue and knows how to deal with it?

I don't remember if i did support that part or not. I would err on the side of caution :P the arms do need to be strong enough to hold a sword or shield

You could try breaking it down into pieces. Do the tail as far as you can go without running into trouble then start the head and do the same then do the arms or shell. Once you have the main parts it might come together easier and be less overwhelming. DON'T GIVE UP! When you finish it AND YOU WILL it will be so worth the trouble
